GASTRIC BANDING SURGERY

Gastric banding is a surgery that aids in weight loss by altering the size of the stomach with the help of a band. After this surgery, your stomach’s size will be smaller and hence you will feel full with lesser food. The stomach band works by limiting the amount of food you can eat, therefore making you feel full after even eating lesser food. Weight loss is the ultimate goal of surgery for the treatment of obesity and should be undertaken only when lifestyle modifications do not work in reducing obesity.

How does Gastric Banding work?

Gastric banding works on mainly restriction. The size of the stomach pouch is decreased, therefore restricting your caloric intake.

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (AGB) is a minimally invasive surgery that puts the band with a miniature camera. Your surgeon will place a band around the upper stomach to create a small pouch that holds food.

The surgical procedure is performed under the influence of general anesthesia mostly and requires a dedicated change in eating habits after the surgery to achieve the aim of the surgery.

How does Gastric Banding work?

The size of the stomach is significantly reduced which ensures early satiety or full feeling. Gastric banding is an example of a restrictive procedure. The advantages of restrictive procedures include:

1. Weight loss, and

2. Improvement of comorbidities such as:

Gastric Banding is one of the types of weight-loss surgeries. Gastric Banding is normally done using minimally invasive surgery techniques. Only few small incisions are made thus avoiding a large single cut. A Gastric banding if done using minimally invasive surgery techniques then has many benefits like shorter hospital stay, quicker recovery, less scarring, less chances of infection etc. Gastric Banding Surgery, also known as the “Lap Band” is a new and effective way to reduce the desire for, and intake of food and there by contributing to significant weight loss over a period of time.

If you have a Body Mass Index of above 40 and have co-morbidities that may improve with weight loss like the type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and obstructive sleep apnea can benefit from gastric banding procedure. A weight loss surgery is always a last option and should only be considered when you have a history of severe obesity and are not benefited from various conservative methods like dietary change, medications, exercises etc. You must have a clear understanding of the procedure, risks, benefits and lifestyle modifications and willingness to follow the instructions on lifestyle modifications given by the doctor after the surgery.

In a Laparoscopic Gastric Banding procedure, a silicon band lined with an inflatable balloon is placed laparoscopically around the stomach near its upper end creating a small pouch and a narrow passage into the larger remainder of the stomach. The pouch thus created fills quickly when person eats food. As the upper part (the pouch) of the stomach registers as full, the message to the brain is that the entire stomach is full, and this sensation helps the person to be hungry less often, feel full more quickly and for a longer period of time, eat smaller portions, and lose weight over time. The silicon band helps to slow down the passage of food from the pouch to the lower part of the stomach.

This balloon is connected to a small reservoir that is placed under the skin of the abdomen through which the diameter of the band can be adjusted by injecting fluid into it as an outpatient procedure.
