Lung Transplant Surgery

Lung transplant is a surgical procedure that relates to a surgical procedure wherein a diseased lung in an individual is replaced by a healthy lung. A lung transplant procedure is suggested if you are suffering from an end stage lung disease such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension or bronchiectasis and have extreme difficulty in breathing. And what is important to know is that, lung transplantation is a globally accepted treatment for some advanced lung diseases, giving the recipients longer survival and better quality of life.

What is the procedure for Lung Transplant Surgeries?

There are four types of lung transplants, single lung transplants (one lung), bilateral lung transplants (both lungs), bilateral sequential lung transplants (first replacement of one lung, then the other) and combined heart-lung transplants (of both lungs and heart). The donor matching must be done with that of the recipient. The recipient will be subjected to a battery of tests, to see the general/ overall health status. The younger the recipient is, the better the chances of success are. After both donor and recipient are declared suitable, the procedure will commence. The procedure of lung donation is performed in an operation theatre by trained team of surgeons, nurses and technicians under general anaesthesia. The donor lung is placed and is connected to the blood vessels, nerves and the heart to make it functional. After the lung is positioned it is checked for its functioning and the surgical wound is closed with the help of sutures. The patient will then be closely monitored in a surgical intensive care unit to avoid any post operative complications. Transplant patients have to be put on immunosuppressive therapy, to ensure the donor organ is not rejected.

Outcome of A Lung Transplant:

Lung transplant is a major surgical procedure which aims at the overall improvement of quality of life in patients who are affected with chronic lung disease. Though it is a major surgical procedure with several risks associated with it, its success rates are reported in literature. It is advised to ask your consulting specialist about the benefits and risks associated with the procedure. For a transplant to be successful it is essential to follow the pre-operative and post operative instructions, maintain a healthy lifestyle, stop smoking if you were and continue the medication as suggested by your consulting specialist.
