SCOLIOSIS SURGERY

Scoliosis can be described as a bend or a curvature sideways in the spine. Though the normal spine is also curved to a certain extent, any curvature more than 10 degrees is designated as Scoliosis.

What are the causes of Scoliosis?

Scoliosis can be idiopathic (where the exact cause is unknown) or can be associated with cerebral palsy, congenital (birth) defects, muscular dystrophy, presence of infections or tumors in the spine, trauma, or injury to the spine, and certain genetically acquired conditions like Marfan Syndrome and Down syndrome.Congenital Scoliosis may be present from birth due to incomplete development of vertebrae which give shape to the spine. It is not necessary for the signs of congenital scoliosis to appear immediately after birth, sometimes they are visible during teenage.

What is the clinical presentation of Scoliosis?

The individuals with scoliosis have unevenness in the shape and size of the shoulders, the hips, and the waist. Sometimes if the curvature is extreme the spine can also completely rotate giving a twisted appearance to the whole body. These individuals also complain of numbness, presence of abnormal and uncontrolled reflexes and generalized muscle weakness.

How is Scoliosis diagnosed?

X-ray of the spine can confirm the diagnosis of Scoliosis. If scoliosis is suspected to be associated with a tumor or an internal injury, a CT scan or an MRI scan be performed to confirm its presence.

How is Scoliosis treated?

Though scoliosis cannot be completely corrected, Braces for the spine help in preventing the progression of scoliosis. If with time the Scoliosis worsens a surgery is advised to correct the curvature.

Spinal Fusion is the most common surgical procedure performed to prevent scoliosis from worsening. Spinal fusion is a major surgical procedure which is performed under the influence of general anesthesia. During spinal fusion the bones of the spine or vertebrae are fused with the help of metal rods, screws, and wires. Sometimes a bone or a bone like material is also placed between the vertebrae during the spinal fusion process.
